Billy F. Gatewood, age 88 of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away on March 14, 2024.
He was deeply committed to his family. Billy is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Louise; three children, Mona, Travis, and Clayton; one brother, Lemuel Gatewood & wife, Diane; six grandchildren, Tammy, Bobby, Joseph, Carly, Lucas, and Chirstopher; five great-grandchildren, Allexandra, Joseph, Jakob, Ellinora, and Renolds and two great-great-grandchildren, David and Lillian.
Billy was dedicated to his Country. His first retirement was from the US Marine Corps after 20 years, serving from 1952 to 1972. This service was during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was recognized for his service by being awarded three Air Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Five Good Conduct Medals, Two National Defense Service Medals, the Korean Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. His second retirement was from Ace Hardware as a Regional Sales Manager.
He was faithful to his Lord and while he was a deacon in his church, he performed stewardship, as well as fellowship duties in church activities and was an outgoing servant to its members. Sunday School training, being church treasurer and being involved in building rehabilitation, were just a few of the ways he served.
Billy was true to himself. He thoroughly enjoyed flying, photographing nature and state capitals. Billy enjoyed travelling the world throughout his life. His travels and photographic adventures included: the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, Japan, and China. He was a Hero to his family and a man of few words.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 22, 2024 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels with Pastor Billy Barnes officiating. Graveside Service & Interment, with military honors, will be held at 10:15 AM on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
