Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Calvin R. Henze passed away on July 16, 2024, in New Braunfels, TX, at the age of 100. He was born January 28, 1924, to Martin and Alice Nolte Henze in Barbarossa, TX. Calvin attended Specht Elementary School and Navarro and Seguin High Schools. Calvin spoke only German until the first grade and worked the fields picking cotton during the summer.

In 1943 he enlisted and served in England in the Eighth Army Air Force and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. After returning from the service, he went to a dance at Echo Hall in New Braunfels, and there was the love of his life, Irene, waiting for him. He asked her to dance, she accepted, and they danced together through 77 years of marriage. They were married February 14, 1947, at First Protestant Church in New Braunfels.

Calvin received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in Accounting from Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, TX, in 1949, became a CPA in 1954, and had a long, impactful career in public utilities. He began as a meter reader, became the Controller of the City Water Board of San Antonio, and in 1961 he became the Controller of Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, and later the President and Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. He served as a board member and President of the American Public Power Association and as the founding General Manager and CEO of the Florida Municipal Power Agency. Calvin said that only in America was it possible for a boy growing up on a farm to become president of two major utility systems.

Calvin and Irene returned to New Braunfels in November 2005, where they joined First Protestant Church and a dance club. Calvin also enjoyed playing softball and bowling. Calvin was an active volunteer at AARP, Senior Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE), and his churches in TX, TN, and FL. His generosity was known to all, as were his kindness, calming presence, and dry wit.

Calvin was preceded in his death by his parents Martin and Alice Nolte Henze, his sister

Letrice, and his brother Jerome. He is survived by his wife Irene, his two daughters Sandra Cress (Kim) and Patti Salkowski (John) and grandchildren Kevin Cress (Kristin), Greg Cress (Monica), Kerri Cress Ryan (Steve), Kate Salkowski (Jonathan Lewis) and David Salkowski (Malavika Rajeev), three great-grandchildren, Luke Ryan and Jonathan and Joshua Cress, and his nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to First Protestant Church, Friedens Church, and Lone Oak Cemetery in Geronimo.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 29, 2024, at First Protestant Church in New Braunfels.  The interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Lone Oak Cemetery in Geronimo.
