Gordon L. Hughes, a resident of New Braunfels since 1984 passed away at home on March 18, 2024 surrounded by peace and love.

Gordon was born May 7, 1948 in Ft. Lewis, Washington to Joe G. Hughes and Daphne May Knight.  Gordon's father was a career U.S. Army man who served in World War II and the Korean War.  After his WWII service he married Daphne Knight, a British war bride. Gordon was their firstborn child, followed by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Gordon grew up in Copperas Cove, Texas where his father was stationed at Ft. Hood, now known as Ft. Cavazos.  Gordon graduated from Copperas Cove High School where he became friends with Kenneth Peters, former minister at New Braunfels Presbyterian Church, who will officiate the Celebration of Life for Gordon.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Virginia Keys Hughes, stepson Jeffrey S. Dickerson (Julie), grandson Ben Harper Dickerson, granddaughter Georgia Claire Nickel, sisters Jody Hughes Hodges (Ronnie), Allison Hughes (Orlando Canelones), brothers Bernard Hughes and Mark Hughes and six nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents and stepchildren Douglas A. Dickerson and Angela C. Dickerson.

Gordon was a prominent businessman in Houston, Austin and in New Braunfels.  Together with his wife Virginia, he played a pivotal role in developing the Gruene Historic District, being two of the first pioneers in the then sleepy part of New Braunfels.  Over the years in Gruene they opened and worked together in the Gruene Haus and the Gruene General Store.  After transitioning from retail, the couple ventured into real estate, notably developing the Common Market Shopping Center on the site of the former Crystal Chandelier Dance Hall.  Gordon's expertise in real estate stemmed from his background as a market analyst.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024

at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels.

A reception will follow at McAdoo's Restaurant Patio next door.
