Herbert
Strunk
Apr 7, 1940 — Oct 5, 2024
Herbert Strunk was born on April 7, 1940, in Herne, Germany, and passed away on October 5, 2024, in New Braunfels, Texas. He is survived by his son, Paul Strunk of Denver, Colorado, and his children, Michael and Kymberlee Strunk, as well as his daughter Anna Beth Darr and her husband Lex Darr of New Braunfels, and their children Trevor and Laci Darr. He is also survived by his sister Helga Becerra and nephew Robert Becerra and his wife Margo of Colorado Springs, Co.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, August and Anna Strunk, his brother Karl Heinz Strunk, and his wife of 54 years, Dannie Wenzel Strunk.
After growing up in post WW2 Germany, Herbert sought a new life in America and with the assistance of his sister Helga and her husband Joel Becerra, Herbert arrived in Yoakum Texas in 1960 where he began his new life. Herbert began learning English and took odd jobs at various businesses as he learned about America and all that it had to offer. Herbert came to visit New Braunfels on a weekend trip with his friends and met the love of his life, Dannie Wenzel, at the local skating rink. Dannie worked with Herbert on weekends when he visited and helped him gain his US Citizenship along with acquiring his GED. They married on May 4, 1963, and built a home in New Braunfels and Herbert began his long career with Mission Valley Mills. One of Herbert's passions was soccer, and he was a referee in numerous leagues in Central Texas for many years along with Coaching his daughter in the area's first all-girls soccer team while building the local soccer leagues we know today. He and Dannie enjoyed numerous activities with the German American Society at Wurstfest and local events and traveling the world and watching their Grandkids grow!
Herbert was honored in 2018 as a Herald Zeitung Unsung Hero of New Braunfels for his decades of giving back working with many local charities along with his work with the Steuben Society.
Later in life, Herbert once again found love and married Maria Horecka in 2018 and enjoyed traveling and their life together before her passing in 2023.
Herbert will always be known for his giving nature, volunteerism, friendship, his faith, and his love for family. He could always be counted on to deliver food for local charities and be the first to arrive at church each morning at Sts. Peter and Paul.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Chapters Living of New Braunfels for their kindness and special care of Herbert for the past year.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Sts. Peter and Paul School fund.
A Visitation will be on October 13 from 5-7PM at Doeppenschmidt Funeral home followed by a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church services on October 14 at 10:00AM. Burial will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
