A lifelong resident of Houston and Bulverde, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Janet passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side.

Janet was a person of many interests and talents. She always engaged life fully and with great enthusiasm. Her kind and gentle nature, generosity, and sense of humor were well known to her family, friends, and acquaintances, who will all miss her.

A graduate of Texas A&M University as a landscape architect, she was also a consummate historian, scholar, researcher, writer and author, preservationist, and a professional consultant. Janet had a home and business office in Houston where for many years she owned and managed J. K. Wagner & Company, Inc. She spent special weekends with her family and guests at her ranch in Bulverde.

Janet's interests and accomplishments were many and are only briefly described here. Because of her passionate interest in and study of the history and cultural landscape of Harris County and Houston she was appointed Chair of the Harris County Historical Commission for six years.  This was a prestigious post she held until she retired as emeritus. Her interests in Texas history and regional history of the Southeast sometimes took her far afield, to such remote places as the National Archives in Washington, D. C., the Mormon Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City, and to archives in London, Kew, and Oxford for research. She often assembled and managed teams of historians and archeologists.  She worked closely with the Texas Historical Commission for compliance with national, state, and local historic preservation laws and regulations and to protect and preserve historic properties and landmarks.

She was a consultant for many companies, large and small, the military, Homeland Security, and for local entities like Harris County Flood Control District, Houston Housing Authority, the City of Houston, and Harris County Public Schools—to name a few—to find historic properties, archeological sites, and hazardous materials. She also served as President of the Friends of Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area, non-profit groups dedicated to the preservation of the history, archeology, and natural environment of those areas.  She also served on the Board for the Bulverde Community Center.

Janet authored and published dozens if not hundreds of reports of her findings, including her book Carolana Florida, A Seventeenth Century English Colony in Texas , first released in 1992 and revised in 2012 and 2018. The book documents the finding of graves in downtown Houston that were identified archeologically and historically as those of Huguenot immigrants to Texas during the 1600s, revealing a previously unknown chapter in the past of the Southeast, Texas, and Houston.

Janet is survived by her husband of 69 years Henry F. Wagner, son Mark Wagner, wife Kelly and daughter Pamela J. Wyrick-Scott, husband Mark Scott of Bulverde, grandchildren Brandon Wyrick of Georgetown, Brandi Wyrick, fiancé Lucas Thompson of Windermere, Florida and Chase Wagner of Santa Anna, California. She was preceded in death by her parents Benno and Jane Kleck and sister Helena Kleck Vivian.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced when it has been determined.
