Lt. Col. Herbert P. Plehn (Ret.) passed away peacefully on the morning of June 3, 2026. Herb was born on May 26, 1928, in Waynesboro, Va and raised in Rochester, NY. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Herbert E. and Ruth Plehn as well as his three sisters, Marianne Halverson, Betty Graef and Barbara Schaeffer.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years Laura Plehn; his son David Plehn; his daughter Jennifer Jung and husband Tim Jung; grandson Ryan Jung with great-grandsons Emmett and Spencer Jung; grandson Geoffrey Jung and wife Claire. He is also survived by his brother Roland Plehn and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was blessed to live 98 years and packed as much adventure into those years as possible. Herb proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot for over 28 years in active and reserve status. He piloted the F-89 Scorpion fighter jet in the Korean war and the C-131 and C-47 transport, troop and medical evacuation carrier airplanes in the Vietnam war. His USAF career took Herb and his family to several locations across the US and one foreign tour in Germany. Herb retired from the Air Force in 1978 while stationed in New Mexico. He and Laura promptly moved back to San Antonio, TX where they felt most at home. Eventually they relocated to Canyon Lake, TX where they became deeply rooted through their faith at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Herb served on the church council for several years, sang in the choir and helped wherever help was needed. Herb and Laura made several life-long friends at St. Andrews with whom they shared the love of golfing, camping and campfire stories. They would leave Texas in the heat of the summer and head to the mountains to enjoy great times with great friends.

After retirement, Herb's passion became woodworking. In his home workshop he created beautiful wooden segmented bowls, vases, decorative boxes, plates and whatever his imagination would come up with. Some of these he would sell at craft fairs, but many were heartfelt gifts to family and friends that he cherished. Herb had a love of life, a wonderful sense of humor and an adventurous spirit that would not let him sit still. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A Life Celebration Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the St. Anderw Lutheran Church 7420 FM 2673 Canyon Lake, Texas 78133.
