Michael Scott (Mac) McFarland

Michael Scott McFarland, 70, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024. Born August 7, 1954 in Sacramento, California to Maurice Scott McFarland and JoAnn Evelyn (Moody) McFarland. Michael was predeceased by his Parents and his son Michael McFarland. Michael is survived by his oldest son Robert (Chelsea) McFarland of Akron, In. and daughter Racheal (Ruben)(McFarland) Castillo of Broomfield, CO. . Sisters Deborah (Gary) Mellenbruch of St Petersburg Fl. and Christine (Robby) Ray of Seguin TX, Brothers Patrick (Belen) McFarland of Spring Branch TX, Timothy (Jane) McFarland of Neenah WI.  and Robert (Victoria) McFarland of Baldwinsville NY. Michael had 3 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a Grandfather, Father, Brother, Son and Friend to many. He always had time to talk and help everyone.

Michael grew up in Liverpool, NY and graduated Liverpool High School class of 1972.

He enlisted in The United States Coast Guard in 1973 and retired in 1997 with the rank E-7  Chief Petty Officer. He spent most of his career in the Great Lakes Region conducting many search and rescue missions. One notable experience was that Michael was the second to last person to communicate with the Edmunds Fitzgerald,  an iron freighter that ran aground in Lake Superior and sank, It was the subject of The song recorded by Gordon Lightfoot.

After retiring from The Coast Guard, Michael owned a Horse Ranch in Hastings Michigan. He worked in Asset Protection for 2 Fortune 500 companies and later was a skilled Machinist for Hastings Plastics in Hastings Michigan and Manth and Brownell in Chittenango, NY and finally retired in 2016 from Caterpillar in Seguin TX.

In retirement he enjoyed fishing and gardening, he could grow anything and specialized in bringing dead plants back to life. He was an expert at fabricating anything you wanted to build from a wall mounted workbench to miniature furniture from a 12 oz can.

Michael will be Honored and placed to rest at the Fort Sam Houston  National Veterans Cemetery in San Antonio TX with full Military honors later this month.
