Randall Ray Chappell, lovingly known by many as "Gunsmoke," passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, at the age of 88. A man of strength, grit, heart, and humor, Randall left behind a legacy as big as Texas — full of hard work, family love, and stories (some more true than others).

Born on March 22, 1937, in McAllen, Texas, Randall was the son of Squire Colbert Chappell and Mina Eltice (Walls) Chappell. He grew up alongside his siblings in a close-knit family that valued tradition, resilience, and storytelling — traits he carried with him for life.

Randall met the love of his life, Sue Ann Hunter, in high school. On their very first date, he confidently told her he was going to marry her — and he did. They were married on October 19, 1956, in Graham, Texas, and recently celebrated 68 years of marriage, a testament to their deep bond and enduring love.

Randall and Sue Ann lived in various places in New Mexico and Texas before eventually settling in Canyon Lake, Texas, in 1969. There, Randall started his own construction company and began a long and varied career path that reflected his incredible work ethic. Over the years, he worked as a milkman, lineman, construction worker, restaurant owner, real estate agent, and as a subcontractor for Thermon — a role that took him to fascinating places like Taiwan, Greenland, the Alaskan Pipeline, and across the United States.

He was known for his exceptional brisket, widely considered the best around, and his quick wit, sharp pool game, and deep love for history. A self-taught expert on the Civil War, Randall collected memorabilia and enjoyed reading and sharing stories — often peppered with embellishments for dramatic effect. His storytelling was legendary, much like his love for all things John Wayne.

Randall was also known as one of the best pool players in Canyon Lake — so good, in fact, that challengers would drive in from San Antonio just to try their luck.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Squire and Mina Chappell; and his siblings Selma Collis Chappell, Deola Malloy Nagy, Wayland Dare Chappell, and Norman Ralph Chappell.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Ann Chappell; siblings James Marshall Chappell and Douglas Allan Chappell (Linda); children Randall "Randy" Allen Chappell, Wayland Colbert Chappell (Joan), and Cynthia "Cindy" Lou Chappell; and grandchildren Ingemund "Ike" Lanman, Brandolyn "Brandy" Hewitt (Benjamin), Monte Chappell (Jennifer), Justin Chappell (Krystal), Brittany Wooldridge (Charles), Devin Justice (Jason), Danielle Nagy, and Amanda Geyer (Landon).

He also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren; Conner, Bailey, Kirsten and Dylan Lanman (Ike); Alyssa Balzano and Maddox Bourland (Brandy); Madison London Carter, Taylor and McKinley Chappell (Monte); Cory, Mason, and Hallee Chappell (Justin); Layla and Grace Wooldridge (Brittany); Braydon Jones, Katelyn and Colt Justice (Devin); Trinity Sheets, Lucas and Brennan Nagy (Danielle); Kassidy, Madalyn, Emma and Layne Geyer (Amanda); along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Though not related by blood, John Wayne Reddit was like family to Randall. The love and support he gave over the years will never be forgotten. The family will always be grateful for everything he did.

Randall's greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He made sure everyone knew how much they meant to him — and his pride in them was unwavering.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Friday August 22, 2025, with services to start at 10:00 am at The Church in the Valley 14181 FM 306 Canyon Lake, Texas 78133.  Burial will follow at the Fischer Cemetery.
