Randall Allen Chappell, affectionately known to most as "Randy" or "Pappy," and commonly mistaken for Kenny Rogers or Grizzly Adams, passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 68. A man larger than life, Randy will be remembered for his quick wit, mischievous sense of humor, unmatched work ethic, and the countless stories that will continue to be told about him for generations.

Born on October 7, 1957, in Tularosa, New Mexico, Randy was the son of Randall Ray Chappell and Sue Ann (Hunter) Chappell. In 1960, the family moved back to Texas where he spent much of his childhood learning lessons that would shape the hardworking and independent man he became.

In 1974, Randy moved to Idaho and graduated from Highland High School in Craigmont in 1976 as part of a class of just 39 students. He returned to Texas in 1977 and followed in his father's footsteps in the concrete industry. In 1981, he started his own concrete company in Canyon Lake, building foundations for countless homes throughout the area. His work helped lay the literal foundation for much of the community, and many families still live in homes supported by his craftsmanship today.

Randy was known as one of the best pool players around. During his younger years, many of his bar tabs were paid for with winnings from the pool table, where he rarely met an opponent who could beat him. He carried that same competitive spirit into everyday life, often challenging friends and family to his favorite game: "Heads I win, tails you lose." More than a few people fell for it before finally catching on.
Some of Randy's fondest childhood memories came from simpler times. He would spend hours catching crawdads using nothing more than a corn-on-a-string hook while lying on a limb hanging over the water. He'd stay until he had enough for his mom to cook for supper, all while feeding the dogs and cats that followed him to keep him company between catches. Those stories reflected the resourceful, kind-hearted, and determined nature that stayed with him throughout his life.

Randy also had a knack for finding entertainment wherever he could. Broken-down televisions, radios, and electronics rarely made it to the trash before serving one final purpose, target practice.

Though he worked hard throughout his life, Randy's greatest joy came from his family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and took pride in watching them grow and build lives of their own. To them, he was more than a father or grandfather. He was a storyteller, teacher, protector, and friend.

Randy was preceded in death by his father, Randall Ray Chappell.

He is survived by his mother, Sue Ann Chappell; his sons, Ingemund "Ike" Lanman and Monte Chappell (Jennifer); his siblings, Wayland Chappell (Joan) and Cindy Chappell; and his beloved grandchildren, Conner, Bailey, Kirsten, and Dylan Lanman, children of Ike; and Madison London Carter, Taylor Chappell, and McKinley Chappell, children of Monte..

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were enriched by his humor, generosity, and unforgettable personality.

Randy never met a stranger for long. Whether sharing a story, lining up a shot on the pool table, teaching a lesson the hard way, or convincing someone to call heads or tails, he left an impression wherever he went. He would give the shirt off his back to someone he just met. If someone was in need of a helping hand, Randy was the one to call.

The foundations Randy poured throughout Canyon Lake will stand for decades to come, but the foundation he built within his family through love, laughter, hard work, and resilience will endure forever.

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in Sattler, Texas.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Church in the Valley. Burial will follow at Fischer Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to join in a fellowship luncheon following the burial at Church in the Valley.
