Obituary

Ronald Cook Wackwitz, 87, passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2021, in New Braunfels, Texas. Ron was born in Catagena, Columbia, on May 15, 1934, to Hortense Cook and Col. Donald Newman Wackwitz. He grew up in San Antonio and attended school at San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in physics and chemistry from Texas A&I and a master's degree in physics from SMU at Dallas.

Ron was a strong Christian who cared deeply for his family, animals, and country. He met his wife, Mattie Olivia Wiggins, at Forest Park Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, and the couple was married there on June 12, 1959. They settled in Richardson, Texas, in 1960, where Ron worked for Texas Instruments. In 1972, the couple moved to New Braunfels, Texas, where they raised their three children, who attended New Braunfels High School. Ron worked at the Health Science Center and the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio and later at Texaco and Compac Computer. He and his family also were members of First Baptist Church for many years.

Ron is survived by Mattie, his wife of 62 years; his three children, Maynell, Don, and Joni; his daughter-in-law, Lori; his two grandchildren, Betsy and Edie; his sister, Linda, of Denver, Colorado; and a large extended and loving family. Ron is also survived by his beloved dauchsaund, Rusty Red.

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and prayers, as well as the staff of Kirkwood Manor and Christus HomeCare for all they did for Ron over the past year.

A public viewing and visitation will be held Saturday, August 28, at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home, New Braunfels, TX, from 9–11 a.m. A 12:30 p.m. service will follow at Hill Country Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
