PLEASE NOTE: A Memorial Service has been scheduled for Sheila Cone Clayton at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels, Texas.
Later that afternoon, Graveside Services have been scheduled at 1:15 PM on Monday, August 18, 2025 for Sheila Cone Clayton and her husband, Virgil Stanley Clayton, Jr. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Sadley, our much-loved Sheila Cone Clayton of New Braunfels TX passed away on April 05, 2025, ultimately succumbing to her hard battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Sheila was born on 18, August 1938 to Mildred O. (Slover) and Ernest Jack Cone (Colonel USAF, Ret.) in San Antonio TX. As a military family, the Cone's lived in many places prior to settling permanently in San Antonio. Sheila attended Northeast High School (now Douglas MacArther High School) where she met the love of her life V. Stanley Clayton, Jr. Sheila went on to study biology and education at Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University) and Stanley went to Idaho to work. For reasons that are not clear to anyone who knew them, Sheila and Stanley went their separate ways and had their own families with many wonderful memories.
Through the years Sheila was a teacher, mail carrier, a jewellery salesperson, part-time farmer, and eventually a long-time realtor in the New Braunfels/San Antonio area. But Sheila's special gift and love was creating a home wherever she was. Her home was frequented by family, friends, and many who just needed a place to stay and a warm meal. Sheila always had a soft heart for those in need. Several of the family's friends' children considered her their "second mom". Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were special times with great food, lively conversation, board games, and football.
In the 90's Sheila and Stanley reconnected and were married in 1994. With Stanleys daughter Jamie, Sheila's family was finally complete. Sheila and Stanley were only married 25 years but loved each other their whole lives. Together they spent many years enjoying their friends and family, fishing, hunting, classic cars, traveling, and a deep love of Scottish Terriers.
Sheila is Survived by her children, Scott Ferguson (Lisa Kaufman) of Verona Wisconsin, Jennifer Hill (Michael) of Kidderminster UK, and Jamie Clayton Graham of Dubois Wyoming. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emma Ferguson (Dan Almond), Maggie Ferguson, John Ferguson, Jessie Hill, Colton Graham and Rachael Graham. She is also survived by her nieces Patrice Ferguson, Dr. Sherry Wolf, and nephew Micheal Cocheres.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents Mildred and Jack Cone, husband Stanley Clayton, sister Jacquelyn Cocheres, sister-in-law Janice Clayton Peck, and Oliver the Scottish Terrier.
A memorial will be held at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels Texas, August 18th, 2025, followed by burial with Stanley at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The time will be announced later. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Valley View Memory Care in Harlingen Texas, and the fine professionals of The Medical Team Hospice for their care of Sheila in the last years of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Medical Team Hospice of Harlingen Texas or The Alzheimer's society.
