Obituary

Walter L. Powell, 77 years, a twenty-two year resident of Canyon Lake, Texas went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 22, 2025 in his home.

Born August 31, 1947 in LaFollette, Tennessee Walter was the son of the late Walter and Lucy (Broyles) Powell.

On April 16, 1966, Dub married the love of his life, L. Joyce Lester at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe, Michigan. After 59  years of marriage, their love for each other and the Lord remained deep.

In addition to being a wonderful husband and father, Dub worked as a fabricator and long-haul truck driver until retirement.

Dub was a Member and Deacon of Grace Bible Church in Canyon Lake, TX, where he oversaw the sound system and provided help with church maintenance. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army 76th Engineers, and during his two years of service, thirteen months were spent in Korea.

Dub was a gifted singer involved in Southern Gospel Music since the age of eighteen. For many years, he traveled and sang with his wife, son, and others in The CrossRoad Quartet aka/Riversong. His favorite event was always going into the maximum-security men's prison in Huntsville, TX, to minister and worship with the men. If he could tell a joke that made you laugh, he would be happy for the rest of the day.  Most of all, Dub treasured the time spent with family and friends.

Dub is survived by his loving wife Joyce, his daughter Rebecca Powell (Douglas) Johnson of Canyon Lake, two sons: Scott L. (Crystal) Powell of Greeley, CO and Christopher R. Powell of Canyon Lake, TX, and nine cherished grandchildren: Madison, Ariana, Mikala, Elijah, Ilayna, Ceanna, Austyn, Alyssa, and MaKenzie.  In addition, he is survived by one brother, Allan Powell of Monroe, Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Rose Mary Tallent, Frankie Perkins, Sue Riggs, and Margaret Peay.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2 at Grace Bible Church, 1101 Triple Peak, Canyon Lake, TX 78133 beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by funeral services celebrating Dub's life at 11 a.m.  Rev. Bill Cooley will officiate. Interment will be held at Hill Country Memorial Gardens, 11700 TX-46, New Braunfels, TX 78132.
